Poker In Athens Protests On Rise. "History Is On Our Side."
Showing signs of momentum and gathering solidarity, pro-Poker In Athens demonstrations took place across the country yesterday. Experts and some 2004 games officials say it may be too late to turn back the "poker tide of history."
In San Francisco, thousands gathered outside Mosconi Center shouting epitaphs in Greek and chanting slogans.
"Poker is about the people, man," organizer Bobby Higgins said while marching toward the ballpark. Dr. Higgins, a PhD from Stanford and a gaming expert, added: "Over 50 million Americans play poker. How many participate in curling or synchronized swimming or rhythmic gymnastics?"
A demonstration in Chicago reached a crescendo when a large truck dumped over fifty thousand decks of playing cards in front of Wrigley Field. Participants, dressed in togas and donned with olive laurels, then climbed atop the pile and planted an American flag in a scene evocative of Iwo Jima.
Stanislaw Grzbinski, a bratwurst vendor, and an avid Omaha player, witnessed the event and said: "When that flag went up, I was proud to be a poker player. I was proud to be an American. It brought tears to my eyes." Grzbinski said the crowd, estimated at over 20,000 by Chicago police, then spontaneously burst into "Team USA" chants.
The protests also drew noticeable contingents from other sporting events. Representatives from Bocce Ball America, Shuffle Board Nation and Outdoor Grilling USA are closely watching the Poker In Athens movement so that they can learn how to get their voice heard and eventually become part of future games. |
